Dale Earnhardt Sr. was an American race car driver who was best known for driving stock cars in NASCAR's top divisions. Dale Earnhardt Sr. began his amazing career in the world of NASCAR by making his first start at the Charlotte Motor Speedway in North Carolina in the longest race on the Cup circuit, the World 600. During this period, Earnhardt also managed to pull in seventh place during the Firecracker 400, in which he caught the attention of Rod Osterlund, who owned a Winston Cup car and was not satisfied with his current driver. At this point, Rod Osterlund went ahead and replaced his driver with Dale Earnhardt. Dale Earnhardt drove with pure fearlessness, as he would not be denied, and by doing this, he won himself a full time position driving for Osterlund. In only his 16th start, he had his first win.
To this day, Dale Earnhardt Sr. is considered the most famous driver in NASCAR history due to the fact he has won six more Winston Cup titles then any other driver of his time. Dale Earnhardt is revered as an American icon along with the likes of all time greats Ed Sullivan and Billy Graham. The entire NASCAR industry benefited and the fans started to really pour in for NASCAR, many drawn in by Earnhardt's driving excellence.
Dale Earnhardt Sr. was killed in the final lap of the Daytona 500 in 2001. His loss was keenly felt across the country and he was mourned by all his fans. His legacy will live on for ages to come.
